Cold is easy here. Dry is the hard part

Air conditioning, heating and ventilation for houses and businesses across Macon and Bibb County — where almost every comfort complaint in July is a humidity complaint that has been described as a temperature one.

What we do, and what we do not

Set out as a ledger, because the second column is the part most companies leave off.

  • Breakdowns and diagnosisIncluded

Any make of air conditioner, heat pump, furnace or air handler. We find the fault and say what it costs to put right.

  • Airflow and static pressure measuredEvery visit

Against the blower’s own rating, not against expectation. It is the number that explains most disappointing systems.

  • Condensate, traps and float switchesEvery visit

In a Macon summer an indoor coil makes a great deal of water, and all of it has to leave deliberately. This is the item that saves ceilings.

  • Load calculation before a replacementAlways

Room by room, from your building. Oversizing is the single commonest cause of a cold, clammy house in this county.

  • Duct sealing and modificationIncluded

Attic and crawlspace runs, joints, returns and the plenum. Priced, or explicitly excluded — never left silent.

  • Dehumidification as a separate questionOn request

Sometimes the answer is a correctly sized system running longer. Sometimes it is dedicated equipment. We will say which, and the first one is cheaper.

  • Commercial maintenance schedulesOn request

A record per unit rather than a tick against the site. Details on the businesses page.

  • Duct cleaning sold as a cureNot offered

Cleaning and sealing are different work with different purposes. If you want cleaning, ask for cleaning and ask what it is expected to achieve.

  • Roofing, structure and hood cleaningAnother trade

We photograph what we find and tell you who should look at it.

  • Claims about what damp does to healthNever

We find water where it should not be and we stop it. What it might be growing, and what that does to anybody, is a question for people qualified to answer it.

Why the humidity is the story

An air conditioner removes moisture only while it is running. Warm wet air passes a cold coil, water condenses on it and drains away, and that takes sustained run time.

A system with more capacity than the building needs satisfies the thermostat in a few minutes, shuts off, and leaves the moisture exactly where it was. The room is cold. It is also damp. People respond by setting the thermostat lower, which costs more and does not help.

In a climate like this one that single mechanism explains an enormous share of what we are called to: the clammy house, the sweating registers, the smell in the closet, the ceiling stain from a drain that never kept up. None of it reads as a sizing problem from the inside.

Common questions

The house is cold but it still feels damp. Why?

Because cooling removes moisture only while it runs, and a system with more capacity than the building needs satisfies the thermostat before it has run long enough to dry the air. Turning the thermostat down makes it colder and still damp, and more expensive. It is measurable before anybody proposes new equipment.

What indoor humidity should I be aiming for?

Broadly the forties to around fifty per cent in the cooling season, and lower in heating. There is a page on this site where you can put in your own reading and see what it indicates. Buy an inexpensive hygrometer, read it in a room you use, and read it over several days rather than once.

Why does my drain line keep blocking?

Because an indoor coil in this climate produces a great deal of water, and a warm wet pipe grows things. It is the commonest cause of ceiling damage we see. The float switch is what stops it becoming expensive and it is sometimes simply missing.

Do you sell duct cleaning?

No. Cleaning and sealing are different work with different purposes, and sealing is what usually changes how a house performs. If you want cleaning, ask for cleaning and ask what it is expected to achieve.

Will you tell me what mould does to my health?

No, and be careful of any contractor who does on a website. We find water where it should not be and we stop it. What it might be growing, and what that means for anybody, is a question for people qualified to answer it.
